ABOUT ‘BEE HIVE HEAD’

‘Hi Honey, Bee Hive Head’ was painted by native Houstonian Bruce A. Reeves in 1993 in his Montrose studio.  He was inspired to paint ‘Bee Hive Head’ after a telephone conversation with MJ.  MJ was working as a paralegal in a law firm.  During the usual course of business, MJ was interviewing a client for his statement as it would appear in an affidavit.  The man continuously answered each of MJ’s questions by saying, ‘Honey, this is the way it happened….’ 

MJ relayed the conversation to Bruce Reeves, and ‘Hi Honey, Bee Hive Head’ was born.

The painting ‘Hi Honey, Bee Hive Head’ explores and exposes the truth that in our society we value a woman’s looks over her intellect or her contribution to society.  ‘Bee Hive Head’ is visual onomatopoeia because the painting evokes the very emotions, thoughts and viewer comments it was painted to expose, illustrate, and explore
